The Gift of Christmas

MEMORY VERSE
“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)

SUGGESTED PARENT+CHILD ACTIVITY
During the Christmas holiday, take time to help your child understand the spiritual dimension of the holiday. That love produces true joy. Help your child understand that we need to keep an eternal perspective and not bow down to the temporal pleasures that the world has to offer.

DAILY PRAYER
Dear Lord, help us to focus on the spiritual side of Christmas, fill our hearts with joy and give us a spirit of worship as we celebrate the birth of Your only Son Jesus Christ. Amen.

Let Your Light Shine!

WHAT WE LEARNED
Today, the children learned about the time the Magi followed a bright star to find Jesus, and at the same time discovered how they can be bright stars for others to find Jesus today. When we let our light shine, by being good little boys and girls, and by choosing to do right instead of wrong, our neighbors, friends, schoolmates, and even perfect strangers can see how we are different. That difference is Jesus. (Scripture used: Matthew 2:1-12)

MEMORY VERSE
"Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)

Practice this verse several times with your child during the week. This will help him or her remember the verse and it will also help to reinforce what he or she learned during class.

SUGGESTED PARENT+CHILD ACTIVITY
Play a little game of flashlight tag with your child. Grab a few flashlights and pick a dark night. One of you can count to twenty while the other runs off to hide. When the perso…

Last Sunday Discovery Point:
We show hope by giving our worries to God

Last Sunday Key Verse:
“Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you” (1 Peter 5:7)

FAMILY DEVOTION
Care Hunt
Why should we trust God and not worry? Read Luke 12:22-32 to find out.

Jesus tells us to consider the birds and flowers and how they teach us that we can trust God and not worry. In the same way that God takes care of the birds and flowers, he takes care of us, too.

Now it’s your turn!
Take your family for a walk outside. As you enjoy the fresh air and the atmosphere around you, look for things in nature that God takes care of. Make a mental list, write things on a notepad, or take digital pictures.

When you get back home, talk about the things you saw as you discuss these questions.

ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS
• How do the things on your list help you see God’s care?
• What does this teach you about God?
• How can you remember to give God your worries this week?

Can’t Blow It Out Read Daniel 6:1-23 together and talk about the way God was with Daniel in the lions’ den. God wants to be with you too! Check out what that’s like.

Hold a small funnel in front of a birthday candle and blow through the small end. (The candle needs to be centered but not inside the wide end of the funnel.)

When the candle doesn’t go out, try again!

Pray together and thank God for putting his protection around you. Ask God to daily remind you of the ways he is present in your life.

Master and Slave
Read Romans 6:15-23 together as a family, and talk about what it means to be a slave to God instead of a slave to sin. Then play the following game to help you learn what it means to be God’s slave.

Pick one person in your family to be a “master of the hour” (or whatever amount of time works for your schedule), and have all the other family members be slaves. Give the master a crown to wear. Have the master give orders to the slaves, and have the slaves obey whatever the master says. (If you’ve got time, let everyone have a turn being the master.)

Sunday School Take-Home for Nov & Dec

Growing closer to Jesus goes beyond the classroom and church.
All our Sunday School lessons include a take-home component, these handouts are given to the kids or parents at the end of class when they are picked up.  It is encouraged that parents, along with their kids, use the handout to plan meaningful activities during the week to review and talk about the topics the kids are learning at Sunday School.  It is a good resource for families to develop faith at home.

Parents, if you did not get the Take-Home Sheets from the Sunday School teacher, or your child made it into a paper airplane and lost it, no worries!

Take-Home Sheets for November and December are available for families to view and download here: Elementary Sunday School Take-Home Sheets

Purchase a gift certificate to a favorite restaurant, or a ticket to a movie, amusement park or local event your family would look forward to. Before attending the fun activity, re-read 1 Peter 1:3-6 together. Go out and enjoy some time together with your family!

"For the Lamb on the throne will be their Shepherd. He will lead them to springs of life-giving water. And God will wipe every tear from their eyes” (Revelation 7:17)

FAMILY DEVOTION
No tears in heaven!

Things will be really different in heaven! Read Revelation 7:16-17 to see how great things will be.

Then, try this!
Take your daily or weekly newspaper and read through some of the headlines together. Using a blue marking pen, draw a large teardrop over the stories that are about things we won’t have to deal with in heaven.

ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS
• How does it make you feel when you read some of these stories?
• Why won’t you find these stories in heaven?
• If there were newspapers in heaven, what kinds of stories do you think would be in them?

God Gives Us Hope Through Jesus

Last Sunday Key Verse:
"Then Jesus told her, ‘I AM the Messiah!’” (John 4:26)

FAMILY DEVOTION
Living Water

What’s the best thing to drink when you’re really, really thirsty? Cool, fresh water. Read John 4:1-26 to see what Jesus said about special living water!

Wow! Jesus said he could offer people living water. That living water is Jesus himself! Because Jesus died on the cross for our sins, we can live forever in heaven. That’s what living water is all about.

Now try this!
Create a commercial for the living water of Jesus. You could draw a poster, act out a skit, or record your voices. Tell people that they need this! Make your commercial as convincing as you can. Show or perform your commercial for at least three people. Have your Bible handy so you can read John 4:13-14 and 26 to your audience!

Sit with your family and enjoy a cold glass of water together. Discuss other ways you can tell people about Jesus. Wr…

God Gives Us Hope Through His Strength

HIGHLIGHTS
Last Sunday Discovery Point:

God gives us hope through His strength

Last Sunday Key Verse:
“But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:31)

FAMILY DEVOTION
Strength to fly!

Ever wish you could fly? Read Isaiah 40:31 out loud. No, that verse isn’t talking about people flying. It’s a promise that if we just trust God, he’ll give us new strength!

Try this trick to remind yourself to trust God!
Stand in a doorway. Press the backs of your hands against the door frame as hard as you can. Count to 25. Move away from the doorway and relax your arms. What happens?

You found new strength!
When you stopped pressing so hard, your arms wanted to fly up. God promises to renew our strength when we trust him, even when we’re tired and troubled. Next time things get tough, remember that God promises to give you new strength!

Try again, but this time, take turns liftin…

FAMILY DEVOTION
Knock Knock!

“Who’s there?” “Peter.” “No way! Peter’s in prison!” Hey, it was an honest mistake. Peter was in jail. But not for long. Read Acts 12:6-16 for an account of a most amazing jailbreak!

Now try this!
Hold a large book in one hand and a sheet of paper in the other. Drop them both at the same time. Which hits the floor first? You’re right! The book. Now try it again with this change. Lay the sheet of paper on top of the book. Drop them together.

The paper followed the book right down to the floor, just like Peter followed the angel out of jail!

On a sheet of paper, have everyone draw what he or she thinks heaven might look like. Then have everyone describe the drawings to each other.

Do it all for the glory of God
Read 1 Corinthians 10:31 out loud together. Take turns saying what you each think this verse means. (It’s OK if you say different things that you think it means.) Whatever we do, we should do it so we honor and glorify God—even if all we’re doing is eating our lunch and drinking our juice!

• How do you think God feels when you give him your best?
• If you were to ask God if he feels honored by everything you do, what would he say?
