God is the Only God

Last Sunday Discovery Point:
God is the only God

Last Sunday Key Verse:
“Jesus replied, ‘The most important commandment is this: “Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and only Lord” ’ ” (Mark 12:29)

Here a God, There a God, Everywhere a God, God
Most of the people the Israelites fought believed that there were all sorts of gods. They had a god for just about everything. God showed the Israelites and the people around them that there was only one true God. Check out Exodus 7:10-13 and 1 Kings 18:20-38.

Have each family member collect several trophies, award ribbons, or other things that are important to them. Take turns telling about what is important about each of the objects. Then talk about how these objects can or cannot help with important decisions or with being a Christian. Talk about whether these objects can do anything that God can do.

Oftentimes it’s not objects that become our idols. Today, idols can be things like money, titles, or athletic ability. All of us worship gods other than the one true God at one time or another. As a family, identify one or two idols that you’ve been worshipping. Then, together, figure out a way to smash those idols. Have a family worship service where the idols are destroyed and the one and only God is praised.

God is the only God, and he has everything under control. Make a list of things in your life you can’t control. When you’ve finished, give thanks that God has control over everything.
