Names of God: Elohim

Past Sunday Discovery Point:
Names of God: Elohim

Past Sunday Key Verse:
“Answer me, Lord, answer me, so these people will know that you, Lord, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.” (1 Kings 18:37 NIV)

Throughout the Bible God presents Himself as “Elohim,” a Hebrew name that means “full of power and strength.” One of the times He especially proved His power was at Mount Carmel where the prophet, Elijah, challenged the false god, Baal. Through this amazing event, God’s people turned away from evil because He proved there is no god but Elohim! Elohim also provided a way for salvation through His Son, Jesus. When we accept the gift of salvation and believe in the Lord, then our hearts will also be filled with strength through the Holy Spirit.

FAMILY ACTIVITY
Talk about good opinions and bad opinions. For example, tell your child about a time when you followed someone’s good opinions or advice and what happened as a result. Then tell him or her about a time you acted on a bad opinion and the consequence you incurred. Discuss how bad opinions disagree with God’s word. And, because God is Elohim and full of strength and power, we can trust that the Bible has the best “opinions” when it comes to living a worthwhile life.

PRAYER
Thank You, Lord, for being full of strength and power. Because You are Elohim, we know You are always ready to help us and remind us that You are the one true God. Thank You for loving us and sending Jesus to die for our sins. Amen.
