Names of God: Yahweh

Past Sunday Discovery Point:
Names of God: Yahweh

Past Sunday Key Verse:
God said to Moses, ‘I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: I am has sent me to you.’” (Exodus 3:14 NIV)

Throughout the Bible God presented Himself as “Yahweh,” a Hebrew name that means “eternally present.” This special name was revealed to Moses, an old man whom God chose to free His people. Through extraordinary events, Yahweh proved to Moses and the Hebrew people that He is in complete control of all His creation. Yahweh has always existed, He’s here in the present, and He will always exist in the future. He is in complete control of events, people, and nature. Yahweh shows us His power by providing helpers, like Moses, to fulfill His plans. We should treat Yahweh’s name with respect because it represents His awesome power and eternal nature.

Point out a few worn items around your house (furniture, torn clothing, broken toys, etc.). Ask your child to consider if the items could have been “saved,” such as keeping shoes off the couch or taking better care of the toys. Then ask him or her to think about Yahweh’s eternal nature – He has always existed and will always exist. Encourage your child to find hope in Yahweh’s eternal nature and His inability to wear out or be defeated. Remind your child that we especially have hope when we trust in Jesus Christ because Yahweh promises us an eternity with Him in Heaven when we believe and repent from our sins.

Thank You, God, for being eternally perfect. Because You are Yahweh, we know You are in complete control of all creation, including our lives. Thank You for loving us and sending Jesus to die for our sins. Amen.
