Psalm 91 - God is A Mighty Fortress
Last Sunday Discovery Point:
Psalm 91 – God is A Mighty Fortress
Today we learned about God’s protection. We certainly need physical protection from things such as the weather, sickness, and even invading armies, but how is our need for physical protection related to our even greater need for spiritual protection? Today we learned that the Bible teaches us that drawing near to God will result in His perfect protection. God acts as a Mighty Fortress, or shield, between us and evil. And when we trust in God’s protection, we don’t have to fear what could happen to us. As children of God who have accepted His free gift of salvation through Jesus Christ, we can be assured of His ability to protect us from harm. Scriptures used: Psalm 91:1-8
“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” Psalm 91:1 NIV
Read the verse with your child. Then write each word of the verse on an index card. Next, shuffle the words, face-up, on a table. Challenge your child to “race” to put the words in the correct order (you may use a timer if desired). Once completed, read the verse with your child. Then repeat the activity by shuffling the cards again and giving yourself a turn to put them back in the right order. Continue this activity as time allows or until the verse is memorized.
Suggested Parent/Child Activity:
Search online for pictures of castles and forts. Discuss with your child the types of materials used to build such structures (stones, bricks, concrete, metal, wood, etc). Ask him or her to consider why such materials are used to build protective structures (because they are strong, permanent, durable, etc.). Explain to your child that even though we have very strong fortresses on earth made from some of the strongest materials, none of them compare the amazing, perfect protection of God. So, when we need help or protection from evil, we can rely on Him to be our Mighty Fortress.
Thank You, God, for being our Mighty Fortress! Help us remember to ask for Your help when we are afraid or need protection. And thank You for Jesus’ example and for His sacrifice. Amen.
