Special Old Testament Places - Egypt

Last Sunday Discovery Point:
Special Old Testament Places - Egypt
Egypt is spoken of many times in the early books of the Old Testament. It was a pagan country, meaning its people believed in false gods. However, God used this special place to reveal His plans to Abraham, Jacob, and Moses. Today we learned how each of these men found themselves in Egypt and what God did in their lives through this special place. Abraham, Jacob, and Moses all had encounters in Egypt (some were good, some were bad). However, God used this special place to set His people on a very specific plan for the future. Even though Egypt was originally a place for shelter and food during hard times, God allowed the circumstances to take a turn for the worse, so He could continue setting events in motion to reveal His perfect plan for mankind: Salvation through Jesus Christ! Scripture used: Genesis 12:10-20, 47:11-13, 28-31, Exodus 3:7-12, 13:3

Memory Verse:
"I rescued you from the hand of the Egyptians. And I delivered you from the hand of all your oppressors.” Judges 6:9a NIV

Read the verse to your child. Then pass a bean bag (or a rolled up pair of socks) while a short song is sung. When the music stops, whoever is holding the bean bag will recite the verse. Continue this activity until each of you have recited the verse a few times. Repeat this activity later in the week to review the verse

Suggested Parent/Child Activity:
Talk about a time when you moved or traveled to a new place to experience God's provision, such as going to college, starting a new job, going on a mission trip, etc. Help your child understand the emotions you felt about going somewhere new (sad/happy, scared/excited, etc.) and make the connection that Abraham, Jacob, and Moses surely felt similar emotions when God lead them all to Egypt. However, God had special plans for each of the men by asking them to go to Egypt, so we can trust that He has a special plan for us as well if He asks us to leave our homes. God will do amazing things when we trust Him and go where He asks us to go! Share with your child the blessings you have experienced by obeying God's calling to "go."

Daily Prayer:
Thank You, God, for teaching us that we can trust Your plans! Help us have joy and peace whenever You ask us to go somewhere or try something new. And thank You for Jesus' example and for His sacrifice. Amen.
