Special Old Testament Places - Babylon

Last Sunday Discovery Point:
Special Old Testament Places -  Babylon
Over the last several weeks we have learned how God used special places like Egypt and the Promised Land to fulfill promises to His people. Today we learned about a place called Babylon (a pagan, or unbelieving nation) and how God allowed some bad things to happen so the Israelites would turn from their evil ways and once again have a right relationship with Him. God brought judgment on the Israelites because they refused to obey His warnings for their sins. The Babylonian King, Nebuchadnezzar, enslaved the Israelites, destroyed their land, and was used by God to discipline His people. We learn from the Israelites’ disobedience that unrepentant sin always has consequences, especially as children of God. Scripture used: Jeremiah 25:1-14

Memory Verse:
“Flee from Babylon! Run for your lives! Do not be destroyed because of her sins. It is time for the Lord’s vengeance; he will repay her what she deserves.” Jeremiah 51:6 NIV
Read the verse several times with your child. Then work together to write 2-3 words of the verse on a piece of paper until the entire verse is written. Then tape the papers in order on the floor in a stepping stone pattern and take turns stepping from “stone” to “stone” while memorizing the verse. You may also cover or remove words to practice filling-in-the-blanks.

Suggested Parent/Child Activity:
Tell your child about a time when you didn’t listen to a warning and faced the consequences of your decision (such as breaking a traffic law, disobeying a teacher when you were in school, or disobeying God). Admit that warnings can be hard to follow because our hearts are sinful and it’s easy to choose selfishness instead of obedience. But God made a way for us to choose what’s better (obedience to Him) through His Son, Jesus! Jesus’ death paid for our sins, and when we trust in Him we no longer have to sin. And, with God’s help, we can become better at listening to His warnings.

Daily Prayer:
Thank You, God, for Your warnings! Help us choose obedience and repentance instead of rebellion toward You. And thank You for Jesus’ example and for His sacrifice. Amen.
