Thanksgiving Series – Hannah was thankful

This Sunday Discovery Point:
Thanksgiving Series – Hannah was thankful
Today we learned about a woman named Hannah and why she was thankful. Hannah is an example of showing thankfulness to God through tremendous sacrifice - she dedicated her only son to serve Him! That must have been very hard for her. However, Hannah was still thankful because she knew she would have remained childless without God’s intervention. She humbly understood that everything belonged to God, even her only child. And, because of her thankful sacrifice, God greatly used her son, Samuel, as a spiritual leader for His people. (Scriptures used: 1 Samuel 1:10-11, 20, 24-28, 2:1-2)

Memory Verse:
“There is no one holy like the Lord; there is no one besides You; there is no Rock like our God.” 1 Samuel 2:2

Write the verse on a piece of paper and read it to your child. Then take turns “cheering” one phrase at a time to praise and show thankfulness to God. Options for cheering include clapping, stomping, or dancing. Then repeat the verse by switching phrases. Repeat this activity several times this week to continue memorizing the verse.

Suggested Parent/Child Activity:
Buy or make a special treat for your child and hide it somewhere in the house. Encourage your child to find the treat and then show thankfulness (e.g. by giving you a hug or sharing some of the treat with a sibling). Remind your child that being thankful is more than just saying “thank you” – it’s about having a humble and grateful heart. And having a thankful heart is pleasing to God!

Daily Prayer:
Thank You, God, for Hannah’s humble and sacrificial example of thankfulness! Teach us to have thankful hearts that want to serve You and others. Teach us to show thankfulness. Thank You for Jesus’ example and for His sacrifice. Amen.
