Thanksgiving Series - Paul Was Thankful

Last Sunday Discovery Point:
Thanksgiving Series - Paul Was Thankful
This month we have learned that there are many ways to show thankfulness to God and others. Moses and Miriam sang songs of praise to show their thankfulness, while Hannah sacrificially gave her son over to God to serve in the temple. Today we learned how and why Paul was thankful to God and his friends, the Philippians. He gives the example that we can be thankful even when we face tough situations. Paul wrote a letter of thankfulness to the Philippians while he was in prison, and he showed thankfulness to God through prayer. We can always be thankful to God in spite of our circumstances because He is still in control! So, during times when we don't feel like there's anything to be thankful for, we can remember Paul's example and trust that God will continue taking care of us too. Scripture used: Philippians 1:1-21

Memory Verse:
"I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy.” Philippians 1:3-4 NIV

Print or type the verses in big letters across a piece of paper. Then cut out each word and shuffle the words, face-up, on a table. Read the verses to your child and show him or her where they are found in the Bible. Then "race" once at a time and put the words in the correct order and read the verses out loud. Continue this activity several times this week to continue working on the verses.

Suggested Parent/Child Activity:
Read an article or short book excerpt about a missionary (or another individual) facing hard circumstances because of his or her faith. Help your child understand that God is very close to us when we face trials or when we're mistreated because of our faith. This is how people who face hard circumstances, like Paul in the lesson and the person in the excerpt, can have peace and even be thankful to God in spite of what happens to them. And we should remember to pray for those who are persecuted for their faith and thank God for His protection and guidance.

Daily Prayer:
Thank You, God, for Paul's example of thankfulness even though he was facing a tough circumstance! Teach us to have thankful hearts no matter what. Teach us to show thankfulness. Thank You for Jesus' example and for His sacrifice. Amen.
