The Lord's Prayer - Honor God First

Last Sunday Discovery Point:
The Lord's Prayer - Honor God First
Today we talked about the importance of honoring God through prayer and looked at a Psalm written by King David as an example of showing respect to God when we pray. We honor God by first approaching Him with humility and respect. Another way we honor God through prayer is by praising His qualities (such as holiness/perfect nature, power, wisdom, great love, etc.). And we can expect God to answer our prayers because He loves us and sent Jesus to die for our sins. Scripture used: Luke 11:1-2, Psalm 5:1-7
Memory Verse:
"But I, by your great love, can come into your house; in reverence I bow down toward your holy temple.” Psalm 5:7 NIV

Look up the verse in the Bible and read it out loud with your child. Then, while sitting at a table, say one or two words of the verse and then roll a ball to your child. Then he or she will say a few more words and roll the ball back to you. Continue the activity until the verse is complete and repeat the activity to continue practicing the verse.

Suggested Parent/Child Activity:
Have a brief discussion with your child about how you show respect to one another (through obedience, kind words, thankfulness, etc.). Then ask him or her to consider if these are the same ways we show respect, or honor, to God. Help your child understand that while we do have some understanding of showing respect through our earthly relationships, respecting and honoring God means we praise Him with the humblest hearts possible. He is God, and He deserves honor more than anyone else!

Daily Prayer:
Thank You, God, for teaching us to pray! Remind us to honor and praise You when we pray. Thank You for Jesus' example and for His sacrifice. Amen.
