Valentine’s Day - Love like Jesus
Last Sunday Discovery Point:
Valentine’s Day - Love like Jesus
The world has a lot of opinions about love…and most of it is incorrect. Many people focus
only on romantic love, but that is just one type of love mentioned in God’s word. Today we
learned what is real, what Jesus’ love is all about and how we can begin to separate
ourselves from the false attitudes about love and truly embrace how God wants to use
love to further His kingdom. We must choose to sacrifice instead selfishness if we want to
love like Jesus. Jesus, who never sinned, deserved endless blessings but instead chose
to sacrifice His own life because of His love for us. Jesus was more concerned about
obeying God by loving others instead of pleasing Himself. And when we follow His humble
example, we show true love to the people around us! (Scriptures used: 1 John 3:11-24)
Memory Verse:
“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down His life for us. And we
ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.” 1 John 3:16 NIV Write the verse on a piece of paper and read it several times with your child. Then cover 1- 2 words at a time (with stickers, a bookmark, or small pieces of paper) and read it together again. Next continue covering words and reciting the verse until you can say the verse from memory
Suggested Parent/Child Activity:
Share a box of candy conversation hearts with your child. Work together to find hearts that
have loving, Godly messages (such as “forever love,” “all mine,” “real love,” etc.). Remind
your child that we can easily get distracted by the world’s definition(s) of love and forget to
love others like Jesus. And when we follow His sacrificial example, others will see that our
love for God is real too!
Daily Prayer:
Thank You, God, for showing us true love! Help us choose loving attitudes toward others.
And thank You for Jesus’ example and for His sacrifice, the ultimate example of love!
Amen.
